about

My family, along with many of you, has a tradition of watching ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ every Christmas Eve. As a kid I didn’t quite understand the attraction to this movie, but as I matured my eyes opened to the wisdom and beauty as it tells the story of the personal sacrifice of one man for the good of his fellow men. It celebrates the importance of love and dedication in a marriage, the importance of family and children, the treasure of devoted friends, the results of being a good neighbor, and the personal cost and blessings of selfless service. It also portrays a Heavenly Father who is intimately aware of each of his children’s challenges and is actively engaged in helping them. A guardian angel is sent to help George Baily through a difficult episode, and by so doing, earns his “wings.” The closing scene is the hallmark of the movie as George Baily’s friends and family gather in his home and sing two songs. First they sing the traditional carol, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, a nod to Clarence, George’s personal guardian angel. Then they sing “Auld Lang Syne” which goes: “Should auld (old) acquaintance be forgot and ne’er brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot for auld lang syne (loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times"). I love to remember those who have made a difference throughout my life and that is the subject of this song. It is about remembering and celebrating your loved ones. It is about remembering “the good ol’ days.” In the final moments little “Zuzu” says the classic refrain “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings”. I do believe in angels, and while I do not believe they have real wings, I think of the “wings” as a metaphor for spiritual growth. I definitely believe spirits can progress and continue growing after this life, especially when they serve others as Clarence does so selflessly in this story. And yes, this recording features my cute kids Finn and Lilly, with additional help from the Williams family.

lyrics

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we will sing a good-will song,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll sing a song of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
Every time a bell rings
An angel gets its wings.
Every time a bell rings
An angel gets its wings.
Every time a bell rings
An angel gets its wings.
Every time a bell rings
An angel gets its wings.
Every time a bell rings
An angel gets its wings.
Every time a bell rings
An angel gets its wings.
